Com base na composição dos meteoritos e comparando-a com a composição da crosta terrestre, Wood notou que havia muito pouco ouro, platina e níquel na crosta terrestre. De acordo com os cálculos de Wood, deve haver 1 quatrilhão de toneladas de ouro no núcleo da Terra. Esta é apenas uma pequena fração da massa total do núcleo, cerca de um milionésimo. Há seis vezes mais platina no núcleo.
